The Muncie community was due for a new family YMCA to help its residents become healthier and happier, but consolidating the county’s two Ys into one would take a group effort.
Consider it done.
The new Muncie YMCA project was made possible through a partnership between Muncie Community Schools, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, Open Door Health Services, Muncie Area Career Center and Ball State University’s Healthy Lifestyle Center, and achieved with the support of multiple donors and new market tax credits.
The new 73,000-square-foot facility features an aquatics center for YMCA and Muncie Central use, clinic and educational space for IU Health, and a mental health clinic operated by Open Door. Ball State’s Healthy Lifestyle Center space offers personal health and wellbeing services.
The facility also includes traditional Y amenities like a state-of-the-art fitness center, gymnasium with sports courts, family locker rooms, and a child watch center.
The facility is strategically located on the campus of Muncie Central High School and will serve as a key component of the city’s McKinley-Whitely Live Learn Neighborhood project.
The new Muncie YMCA is a community resource, achieved by the community.
