When the YWCA of Northeast Indiana recognized the urgent need for more shelter space, they envisioned a place where women and children in crisis could find safety, support, and hope. Their existing facility simply couldn’t keep pace with the growing demand, and they needed a new approach—a space that would not only increase capacity but also offer a sense of community and belonging.
That vision took shape with the transformation of the nearly 80,000-square-foot former Don Hall’s Guesthouse hotel into the new YWCA Hefner Center. This project was more than just a renovation—it was a reinvention, turning a once-vacant building into a vibrant, welcoming environment designed to uplift those who needed it most.
The former sprawling hotel offered a unique opportunity to adapt existing guest rooms into temporary stay spaces with minimal changes, preserving the building’s structure while creating a comfortable, supportive environment. The new main entry features monumental lighting, a versatile community area, and a cozy seating space around a preserved fireplace—blending warmth and openness while honoring the building’s original design.
One of the project’s most significant achievements was dramatically increasing bed space, allowing the YWCA to reach more women and families than ever before. In addition to the immediate shelter needs, the Hefner Center was designed to grow with the community. Future phases will introduce vital resources like training programs, commercial kitchen services, and long-stay apartment-style units, ensuring that the center continues to serve those in need for years to come.
The transformation wasn’t without challenges. The building had stood vacant for some time, leading to issues with outdated MEP systems and code compliance. An in-depth code study identified ways to leverage existing structures, including using CMU walls as fire barriers—an innovative solution that met safety requirements while conserving resources.
Throughout the process, collaboration with the YWCA leadership ensured that every design choice aligned with the center’s mission. Thoughtful planning led to creative solutions, such as converting an unused swimming pool room into functional office space. This partnership allowed the project to stay true to its purpose—creating a space where women and children feel safe, valued, and supported.
Today, the Hefner Center stands as a symbol of resilience and compassion—a place where women and families can rebuild their lives in a nurturing environment. The facility is a lifeline, offering not only shelter but also the promise of a brighter future.
