A New Standard: Northwest Allen County Schools opens showpiece Administration Center

For 50 years, Northwest Allen County Schools operated its district office out of space in the back of Perry Hill Elementary. As the district grew, the administrative team adapted, working in repurposed classrooms, makeshift spaces, and even storage closets.
“They’ve done incredible work despite those working conditions,” Superintendent Wayne Barker said.
They no longer have to work in a substandard space. The district has opened its new stand-alone, showpiece Administration Center.
“Today we give (the administrative staff) a space that truly supports their efforts,” Barker said at the grand opening. “We’re excited to bring all those folks here.”
The new district office is a glimmering facility, intentionally designed to foster collaboration, efficiency, and a seamless connection between district leadership and the schools they support. Anchored by a glamourous main corridor, called Main Street, the building houses the district’s Technology, Human Resources, and Business operations for the entire district, as well as Special Education, Teaching/Learning, and Safety and Operations departments, along with the Superintendent. A new kitchen area as well as lounge and gathering spaces were also incorporated.
A highlight of the facility is the boardroom. A sophisticated space with expansive floor-to-ceiling windows that create transparency and connection with the community, the room is equipped with state-of-the-art audiovisual technology that allows for seamless communication and engagement. Beyond it, staff offices are designed for efficiency, featuring open collaboration areas alongside private workspaces to accommodate a range of working styles.
Natural light floods the interiors, fostering an open and welcoming atmosphere. The building’s sleek, contemporary aesthetic reflects the district’s commitment to innovation and progress.
“This building represents progress, growth, and our commitment to supporting students, staff, and families,” said Board President Liz Hathaway. “It will allow us to better provide service to our community.”
“A project like this starts with a vision,” explained Barker, “and the team at Elevatus Architecture played a crucial role in designing a space that is both functional and forward.”
Elevatus Education Design Leader Emily Hower praised the collaboration between the design team and the district.
“On behalf of the Elevatus Education team, we are deeply grateful to Northwest Allen County Schools for trusting us to design this new Central Office. This district’s leadership—Superintendent Barker, the board, and so many others—cares profoundly about its students and future, and that dedication made this project truly special. You were all wonderful partners, and the final outcome is a testament to your vision.”
That vision now stands tall—a showpiece not only for the district but for the region, setting a new standard for what a modern Administration Center should be. It’s a place where leadership thrives, where decisions are made with care, and where the unwavering commitment to students takes shape in ways both seen and unseen.
For Northwest Allen County Schools, the future isn’t just bright—it’s built on a strong foundation, one that starts right here, in a space worthy of the people who make it all happen.
By establishing district-wide interior design and materials standards, schools can save money, streamline maintenance, and create a seamless learning environment that supports students and staff alike.
