Around the same time Kokomo decided it needed a new YMCA facility, the city was also beginning an effort to revitalize its urban core. The community came together to achieve both goals with the new Kokomo Family YMCA.
A signature component of the larger revitalization of Kokomo’s downtown area, the project was born through a true public-private partnership between the YMCA, local businesses, supporters, St. Joe Kokomo Hospital, and the City of Kokomo, all joining forces to see the project through. In fact, in addition to capital, the City of Kokomo provided land, site development, and parking garage access.
When a community unites, good things happen, and the new 83,000 square foot Kokomo Family YMCA is a good thing.
Designed to look like an urban building, the facility features a lap pool, warm water pool, racquetball court, indoor running track, a chapel, large meeting rooms, massage therapy areas, future medical office areas, and an expansive second floor wellness center with views of the growing Kokomo community. The gymnasium is sunken one level down to give visitors a vantage point from which to view activities from the main level balcony.
The facility was designed with input from city leaders who envisioned a building that reinforced the fabric of its downtown and added to the walkable nature of Kokomo.
Construction began in late 2014 and the facility was completed and opened in early 2016. With smart design work and economic solutions, the 22-month project came in under budget.
