Smart. Safe. Secure. The Decatur County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center will serve the community of its immediate and long-term needs. This project is alike to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center model. With the 236 beds within the same footprint as the Adams County Jail, it will provide accommodations for the future growth in Decatur County.
The fully-functional detention center possesses all components to maintain Sheriff’s administration, video visitation, intake, food service and laundry, medical, and housing. The two-tier housing area is subdivided into 8 day-rooms to give maximum flexibility for classification, and includes one dormitory, a recreational area that can be converted into dormitory, one unit of four man cells, and five units of two man cells. The housing pod consists of a central raised control room that is a centerpiece for a jail officer’s observation. Rear chases are provided to optimize maintenance and strengthen security measures. The jail is equipped with industry-leading electronics to ensure safety of all officers and support personnel. The plan is laid out for ease of expansion for all departments, and provides space for cross-agency activity.
The facility is also host to a minimum security housing operated by the Sheriff, consisting of a 28-bed male unit and 20-bed female unit. This facility also hosts unique programming and educational opportunities for the inmates. Specifically, a recovery program operated in one of the minimum security dormitories intended to improve inmates needs and growth to become valuable members of society upon reentry. Minimum security housing functions are separate from the secure jail location. The administration area includes an emergency operations center, Sheriff’s reserve office, workout facility, and organizational spaces for visiting agencies.
