It was important to the commissioners that the design of the facility relate to the rich architectural detail of downtown Richmond. Throughout the design process, the team at Elevatus met with county commissioners, city council members, and several other interest groups to identify a design that was acceptable to all stakeholders. The result is a civic building that not only complements the historic county courthouse across the street but also allows for future expansion of cells.
The facility contains 397 general-housing beds, 44 beds designated for work release, a medical area, a sheriff’s administration and detective department, a patrol department, 7 technology laboratories, a courtroom, indoor/outdoor recreation spaces, and state-of-the-art security technology for the video visitation units, central and satellite control, and open booking/intake.
